President of the Republic inaugurates the Pedro Maria Tonha “Pedalé” Hospital Complex
Luanda, September 27, 2025. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, today inaugurated in Luanda the General-of-the-Army Pedro Maria Tonha “Pedalé” Hospital Complex, located in Morro Bento. The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Health, Sílvia Lutucuta, members of the Executive and other invited entities.
Considered one of the most modern and complete healthcare units in the country, the new hospital stands out for its technological sophistication and its capacity to respond to highly complex diseases, with a special focus on oncology, radiotherapy, hemodialysis, nuclear medicine and, in the future, transplants.
The Pedalé Hospital Complex has 145 beds, 35 consulting rooms, 16 examination rooms, 25 hemodialysis chairs and 8 chemotherapy chairs, in addition to a modern operating block, imaging center, intensive care unit, hospital pharmacy and morgue. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, it also includes two linear accelerators, a 3 Tesla MRI scanner and a dual-source 256-slice CT scanner.
With a built-up area of 42,157 m², the Complex consists of four distinct buildings, with the main building comprising three floors, housing technical areas and outpatient clinics. In addition, it also includes the Advanced Training Center, the Integrated Support Building, and the building that houses the heliport and a car park with a capacity for 180 vehicles. The complex also includes a six-story residential building with 20 apartments for healthcare professionals.
The Advanced Training Center, equipped with a simulated surgery room and training robots, will strengthen the continuous training of doctors and national technicians, enabling the introduction of innovative practices in national medicine.
During construction, carried out by WEDO, which oversaw the full management of the project, 1,350 workers were involved, of whom 1,320 were nationals, thus promoting employment, knowledge transfer and the training of young Angolan professionals.
With the inauguration of the Pedalé Hospital, Angola significantly strengthens its diagnostic and treatment capacity, particularly in the field of oncology, placing itself at the forefront of healthcare in the African region.
