President of the republic visits the new Pedro Maria Tonha “Pedalé” hospital

The President of the Republic, His Excellency João Lourenço, today visited, in Morro Bento, the construction site of the Pedro Maria Tonha “Pedalé” Hospital, which is practically completed and scheduled to be inaugurated next September. The new healthcare facility stands out as a true “jewel in the crown” due to its sophistication and its capacity to address highly complex diseases.

Accompanied by the Minister of Health, Sílvia Lutucuta, the Head of State toured the hospital’s various areas in detail. The facility will have 144 beds, 25 haemodialysis chairs, and 8 chemotherapy chairs. The Minister described the project as “emblematic” and confirmed that the works are in their final stage, assuring that the inauguration will take place soon.

The Pedalé Hospital will be a modern, multi-purpose facility with specialised high-complexity services, such as oncology, haemodialysis, radiotherapy, nuclear medicine, and, in the future, transplants. In the field of oncology, it is expected to treat various types of cancer, with particular focus on breast cancer.

The complex covers an area of 42,157 m² and includes a three-storey main building housing emergency services, outpatient consultations, an operating theatre, imaging services, and support facilities. The basement will accommodate technical areas such as the laundry, morgue, kitchen, hospital pharmacy, and waste disposal unit.

Highlights also include a histocompatibility centre, an advanced training centre with a simulated surgery room, an intensive care unit, and medical training robots, reinforcing the use of cutting-edge technology already implemented in other units in the country.

The hospital will feature a helipad, 180 parking spaces, and a six-storey building with 20 two-bedroom apartments intended for the accommodation of healthcare professionals. The four-storey training centre will promote specialised and continuous training for medical and technical teams.

With this investment, Angola reaffirms its commitment to a modern, accessible, and technologically advanced public healthcare system, placing at the service of the population a facility of national and international reference.
